Within every mitochondrion, ATP synthase nanomotors spin at approximately 9,000 RPM to synthesize ATP, the primary energy currency of biological cells. This process relies on a steady stream of single protons (hydrogen ions).
Naturally occurring water contains ~150 ppm (parts per million) of deuterium. Deuterium (D or ²H) is twice as heavy as standard hydrogen because it contains a neutron. When heavy deuterium enters the nanomotor, it physically collides with the enzyme’s structural rotors, stalling the motor, lowering ATP production, and generating damaging Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS).
